St. Joseph’s Group of Schools, Chengalpattu

The Archdiocese of Madras Mylapore was bifurcated into Chennai and Chengalpattu dioceses in 2002. The parishes within Chengalpattu, Kanchipuram, St. Thomas Mount came under the territory of Chengalpattu diocese. St. Joseph’s group of schools which is in the heart of Chengalpattu town is one of the leading groups catering to the educational needs of various sections of the society from lower to upper middle class.

The year 2000 saw the transfer of St. Joseph’s Group of Schools’ administration to the Province of Trichy. Bro. Selvanathan as its head took charge of the institutions with Bros. Antonysamy R, Rozario Mahimainathan and Innasi Asir to assist him. Under his dynamic leadership ably assisted by the united community of brothers, the institutions began to grow by leap and bounds in every way. Keeping pace with the changing scenario in the field of education, which calls for additional facilities, the team enchanted the campus by building a new stage measuring about 80×21 ft, provided new classrooms, renovated the science labs and computer labs to the modern standard. Joefez is another new block put up during his leadership. His interest and concern to improve the quality was equally distributed to all the sister institutions. This elevated not only the image of the brothers’ administration but also improved the quality of the discipline and standard of the students in all fields. He fathered many new creative ideas like JOEFEZ, an interschool cultural fest annually organized, brought the confluence of many schools in the district to vie with one another in the right spirit. St. Joseph’s Home for poor Boys has a 37 – year history right from the year when the brothers took charge. Nearly 45 poor boys enjoy this privilege under the direct supervision of the brothers, who make it really a home for them. Boys selected by the diocesan administration are admitted in Std. IX and XI with the monthly subsidy from the diocese. This practice continues even after the bifurcation of Madras – Mylapore diocese giving birth to the diocese of Chengalpattu in 2002 with Rev. Dr. A. Neethinathan as its first Bishop.

The community purchased 15 cents of landed property adjacent to the main school playground and another 9 cents of land near the English medium primary school in 2002. Bro. Selvanathan known for his youthfulness even on the verge of retirement, was awarded the State Best Teacher Award by the Govt. of Tamilnadu in 2002 in recognition of his yeomen service done to the youth for their education and formation, a deserving gesture that makes us proud. Montfort Centenary Academy is the brainchild of Bro. Selvanathan and his team of young Brothers, who conceived and delivered with inevitable them with the normal ones in the same campus. From June 2003 Bro. Cyriac Pulickal is at the helm of affairs with Bros. Antonysamy, Easudoss and Anantham, who contribute for the all round growth of the students.

In 2004, the K.G. School, in Vedachalanar was converted into a Matriculation School and Std. VI was started. During 2005-06, Montfort Block was inaugurated. In 2009, Matriculation School was raised into a higher secondary school.
